I didn’t expect Kathryn and Andrew’s wedding at Morton Arboretum to be a winter wedding. But when Chicago got an unusually early and heavy snow storm I was very excited to have be shooting in a space surrounded by trees.

My morning started with Kathryn and her sisters all doing their makeup together in their mom’s bathroom. Meanwhile, Justin was with Andrew and his groomsmen getting ready at the Lisle Hyatt.

Andrew and Kathryn braved the cold all day, starting with their first look outside the Thornhill Education Center. From there we transitioned into portraiture, ducking inside every 10 minutes or so for a quick warmup. Because of the early sunset with winter weddings, we really have to shoot most of the portraits prior to the ceremony, so I’m glad Kathryn and Andrew scheduled plenty of time.

The ceremony was inside the Founder’s Room Library, which provided a perfect cozy space. The moment the door swung open for Kathryn to walk down aisle was pretty awesome. During the ceremony, guests passed the rings amongst themselves and were encouraged to say a silent prayer or blessing. I always love the “ring-warming” ceremony. I also loved Andrew carrying their newborn daughter, Eleanor, back down the aisle on their exit.

In our planning leading up to the wedding day, Kathryn mentioned that she thought the Illumination exhibit with the lighted trees could make for a cool portrait spot. Justin and I actually spent some time on Friday scouting the different displays within the exhibit. As always, planning ahead made the difference and I love the photo we made under the chandeliers. I mean, when else do you get chandeliers hanging in trees!

After the Illumination wedding photos, it was time for the reception, which kicked off with Kathryn and Andrews first dance. Kathryn’s sisters all gave a joint toast which was followed by Andrew’s best man’s toast. Then Kathryn danced with her dad and Andrew danced with his mom. Toast & Jam rocked the dance floor all night – never a surprise.
Kathryn and Andrew’s friends surrounded them in a big circle toward the end of the night. What a perfect way to cap off a great wedding. Thanks again for letting us document your beautiful day!
