As a Chicago wedding photographer, I’m used to shooting around Adler Planetarium. It’s easily one of the most requested Chicago wedding photo locations, in big part because it offers the most complete skyline view in the city.
So even though I’ve shot a lot of Adler Planetarium wedding photos, it wasn’t until Emily & Kieran’s wedding day that I actually got to shoot inside. As excited as I was to photograph in the beautiful venue, I was even happier to see some familiar faces. I worked with Kieran’s family previously when I shot Regan & Ryan’s wedding at Roosevelt University’s Auditorium Ballroom. Regan & Ryan were great and I was thrilled they sent Emily & Kieran my way. Wedding photography isn’t really the kind of occupation where I get a lot of “repeat customers” but I’m always happy to see couples I’ve worked with at the weddings of their friends and family.
I started the day with Emily and the ladies while they got ready at Sheraton Grand hotel downtown while Justin documented Kieran’s morning. Once everyone was ready, Emily & Kieran met in a little park across the street from the hotel for a first look. Then we loaded the wedding party on the bus and headed to one my favorite secret photo spots – Lakeshore East Park for some portrait time.
After we finished most of wedding party photos we loaded back into the bus and headed north to St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Evanston. The church offers seating in the round, which allowed us to make pictures from a lot of good angles. One of the toughest parts of shooting inside a church is the restricted access so it’s great to be able to get the camera where it needs to be. Oh, and the balcony allowed for a great overall view.
After the ceremony we headed back downtown to the Adler Planetarium reception. We were able to get a quick wedding party photo and a few more portraits during cocktail hour. The details and decor at Adler were top notch and the all-glass room provided a perfect view of the city as the sun went down.
After toasts Emily & Kieran stole away for a few more minutes for nights photos of the famous Chicago skyline view before it was dancing time. Emily & Kieran had their first dance and then they danced with their parents. The parent dances managed to be both very sweet and really funny. I expected a packed dance floor (based on Regan & Ryan’s wedding) and we definitely weren’t disappointed.
Such a pleasure to work with Emily & Kieran and your families, you made the day fly by. Thank you so much for letting us tell your wedding story!
