North Ave. Beach, located on the shores of Lake Michigan in the Lincoln Park Neighborhood, is one of Chicago’s most popular destinations for engagement photos and wedding portraits.

With an iconic postcard view of the Chicago skyline it’s the perfect place to finish as the building lights come on during the twilight “blue hour.” In addition to the classic skyline shots, you can take a walk along the concrete pier or the sandy beaches.

North Ave. Beach is also located conveniently next to Lincoln Park, so it pairs well as a second location if you want to start with a little more nature.

In the summertime, boathouse-themed Castaways Bar and Grill is a perfect spot to get a drink and has restroom facilities for changing outfits.

If you’re feeling especially ambitious, North Ave. Beach is one of the best places in the city for a “sunrise session,” thanks to its lakeshore location and unobstructed view of the eastward skies.

There is a parking a lot where W. LaSalle Drive dead-ends east of Lake Shore Drive. It’s pretty pricey ($21 for the first hour) but it is very convenient.

In most cases, I’ll suggest traveling by Uber/Lyft during our engagement session. It’s less complicated than figuring out parking at each destination and often less expensive.

Driving ourselves usually eats a lot of time with the added logistics of parking and getting to where we want to go. If you have a friend or family member who wants to drive us, that can be a convenient option as well.

There are some grassy areas and the concrete breakwall path where dogs are allowed but dogs are not allowed on the beach. If you’re envisioning a walk in the sand with your pup, Montrose Beach does have a dog-friendly beach area.

I would suggest starting in nearby Lincoln Park if you’re planning on bringing your dog. It’s usually less crowded and won’t be overwhelming for your pooch.
